The county seat, Eaton, serves as the hub of this vibrant region. Preble County was established on February 15, 1808, carved out of portions of Butler and Montgomery Counties. It is named in honor of Edward Preble, a celebrated naval officer who distinguished himself during the American Revolutionary War and in battles against the Barbary Pirates.

Geographically, Preble County covers 426 square miles, with 424 square miles of land and 2.3 square miles (0.5%) of water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The county shares its borders with Darke County to the north, Montgomery County to the east, Butler County to the south, Union County, Indiana to the southwest, and Wayne County, Indiana to the northwest. The county is blessed with picturesque rivers and streams, including Little Four Mile Creek, Harker's Run, Seven Mile Creek, Twin Creek, Price Creek, Goose Creek, and Pottinger Run.
