Shirley J. Hollingsworth

Shirley Jean Hollingsworth, 83, formerly of Lamarque, TX, passed away Friday evening April 13, 2018. Born July 13, 1934 in Tulsa, OK, she was the daughter of the late Harry Oswald and Loneta Leona (Hollis) Patterson. Shirley was a lifelong educator. She earned her Bachelors Degree at Abilene Christian College, her Masters Degree from Texas Women's College, and her PhD from Ohio State University. She began her teaching career as a third grade elementary school teacher. She was a professor at Ohio State University, Wright State University, College of Mainland in Texas, Texas Women's University in Denton, TX and the University of Houston Clear Lake City Campus. After retiring, she spent her time as a volunteer tutoring elementary school children in Lamarque and also as an usher at Galveston Theater. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by husbands Dr. Harold Marvin Hollingsworth and Dr. Kenneth Harrison. She is survived by sons Sam Shortes of West Alexandria, OH; Stanley Shortes of Lewisville, TX; and Shell Shortes of Tega Cay, SC; along with 18 grandchildren and great grandchildren; and former husband Samuel Ray Shortes of Lewisville, TX. The family will be hosting a memorial service for Shirley at 6:00 PM Monday, April 16, 2018 at the Robert L. Crooks Funeral Center at Preble Memory Gardens - 3377 US Rt. 35 - West Alexandria.
