Grace Elizabeth Caplinger

Grace Elizabeth (Crichton) Caplinger, 92, formerly of Gratis, OH, passed away Tuesday afternoon December 26, 2017. Born November 19, 1925 in Elgin, IL, she was a daughter of the late Thomas J. and Mae Elizabeth (Witherbee) Crichton. After earning her teaching certificate, she began her career at Gratis High School teaching History and Music. For a short time she taught at West Elkton Elementary School, and later as a substitute teacher all over Preble County. She taught from 1945 to 1960. She went on to earn her real estate license and worked for Hartman Realty in Middletown in the 1960's. Grace was elected Clerk for Gratis Township and served in that position for 20 years. A member of the Berema Club in Gratis, her love of reading and teaching led her to the Preble County District Library's Literacy Program where she taught the adult reading program. She also taught piano throughout Preble County for many years and taught her last students while she was a resident in the assisted living facility at Vancrest. A devoted and lifelong member of the Gratis Church of the Brethren, she played organ and piano at worship services for over 60 years. She was an avid gardener and could grow anything. Grace is preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Mae Crichton, beloved husband Ronald Ray Caplinger, whom she married February 7, 1947: son James Randolph Caplinger: sister Hazel Fern Crichton: and great granddaughter Caitlin Marissa Koehl. Survived by children George Rodger Caplinger and wife Barbara Bell of Eaton; Janet Ellen Gitz of Camden; and William Scott Caplinger of Camden: 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Friends may call on the family from 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM Saturday, December 30, 2017 at the Gratis Church of the Brethren - Corner of Ada Doty (SR 503) and Mack Streets - Gratis, OH. Funeral services will follow at Noon with Pastor Shawn Wilges presiding. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Preble County District Library or Hospice of Dayton.
